I really liked conference a lot

Apr 6, 2015

So the weather is warming up! We got into the sixties for a week or so then back to around 40, but now its pretty good, can break out the short sleeves and its great! The only thing I don’t like right now is the wind. It gets pretty strong and makes walking outside annoying, but that’s not that bad. Spring break has been over for a week or so now so everybody’s back, it was a bit of a ghost town that week and I’ve heard that’s what it is like in summer, half the town leaves.

Well this week was interesting. We’ve been doing a lot of tracting and it seems like most of the areas we knock doors in are the nicer parts of town. Lots of well off people which have the stereotype of most of the people not being interested, and I feel like that is accurate. We’ve knocked a lot of doors and only a few say we can come back and a lot of those people say that they weren’t really interested after all (they’re trying to be nice and not tell us to our face they don’t want us to come by so they say a different time, every time we stop by, until they finally tell us they really aren’t interested or something like that) but we did talk to this couple that said they go to Cornerstone, which is a megachurch in Ames, and they actually have a bible study in their home every week, Tuesday night at 7. It was Tuesday night at 6 and they said we could come back for it if we wanted. So we did and nothing really came of it but it was different. First off everyone coming showed up late, 15 to 20 minutes, so I guess that’s good to know its not just us that’s late to everything, and then they talked for about that long again, so we really started 7:30-40 and Elder Olsen and I were planning on taking dinner at 8 because we didn’t have a member dinner, so that went out the window, but the guy leading it had people read the end of Colossians 1 and the beginning of chapter 2 and then we were going to talk about it. So we pull out our bibles to follow along and that didn’t really work either. They were using a new translation and we have the King James. It was like trying to listen to someone paraphrase Shakespeare and read the real text at the same time. Super confusing so not sure if their interpretation of it was correct or not. We talked about things and the topic shifted to grace and works and how you only need to confess the Name of Jesus and then you’re saved and go to heaven, but once you’ve been saved and have that faith, it leads you to act and to do things, but those works aren’t the thing that saved you, it was getting saved and the grace of Jesus that saved you. I really wanted to talk about James and how faith without works is dead, being alone, but that wasn’t really the best place to try and argue, and no one really asked us any questions so for the most part we just observed. It was just interesting. Then the closing prayer was the longest prayer I think I’ve ever heard. It was literally 20 minutes. Each of the 20 people took a turn to say a part of it and so we participated in that when it went around the circle to us, and we prayed a little differently, but it was a good experience.

I hope that you’ve all heard about the Because He Lives video/website that the Church made. It’s really well done. We’ve got the pass a long cards for it like we did the He is the Gift ones at Christmastime, but now its Easter. It’s a really awesome way to share how we believe in Christ. There is a part of the video where it says something to the effect of Jesus Christ lives today, and then it says “Find Him”. I really like that invitation to act and I think that is really the reason we are here, to find Him. That’s why we go to church, pray, read our scriptures, and do all of those things, to build our relationship with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, to find Them. And that’s what we are trying to help as many of our brothers and sisters to do, to find Jesus Christ. Its a very well done video and is great to share, so use it!

I love you all so much!
Elder Hayden
